Driver Tip: Disable Driver Signing Warning Message

Have you ever tried to install some device drivers on Windows 7 and received a warning message that those drivers should be digitally signed? You can disable this driver signing warning message in Windows 7 with a simple procedure.

Go to the Start menu and type cmd.exe in the Search Bar. Right click on cmd.exe and choose Run as Administrator.

If you have the UAC turned on, choose Yes to proceed. Otherwise, you should see the command windows opened already. In the shell window, copy and paste the following and hit Enter.

bcdedit.exe -set loadoptions DDISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS
bcdedit.exe -set TESTSIGNING ON

You'll get a confirmation that the operation completed successfully. Restart your computer for the changes to take effect. You've just disabled digital driver signing in Windows 7.

BIOS Tip: Keep Unauthorized Users from Making Changes

The Security section of the BIOS can be used to keep unauthorized people from making changes to the BIOS.

The option called Security Option can be set to either Setup or System. When it is set to SETUP the security is on the BIOS Setup screens. A user would need a password to be able to make changes to the BIOS Setup screens.

When the option SYSTEM is set, the user will need a password to even get the system to boot.

There are also settings for Supervisor Password and a User Password. If you choose to set the Security Option then you will need to set your Supervisor and User Password options. If you choose to select a Supervisor Password, a password will be required to enter the BIOS after you choose setup, as described above. If you choose SYSTEM as described above, then a password will be required for cold-booting as well.

With the User Password option, a different password assigned to users is required to boot the PC, and if a Supervisor Password has also been selected, permits the user to only adjust the date and time in the BIOS.

Registry Tip: Disable Windows 7 Hibernate Mode

Tired of your Windows 7 system going into hibernate mode and you want to disable that feature?

Windows 7 doesn't make it easy to turn off hibernation, annoying if you never use it as you'll permanently have a "hiberfil.sys" file taking up a sizeable portion of your hard drive.

To rectify this situation:

Launch REGEDIT

Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power, and set HibernateEnabled to zero.

This disables hibernation and removes the hiberfil.sys file freeing up valuable drive space.

Question and Answer
My HP Pavilion laptop with Windows 7 is running very slow and I am starting to get the dreadful "blue screen of death". Microsoft suggests reinstalling Windows, but I am VERY nervous that I will lose precious data on my hard drive. Can you suggest a safe and easy fix that I can do that will prevent me from having to reinstall Windows from scratch?
- Jennifer G. Naples, FL
Yes. eSupport.com recommends a great program that is simple to use called Reimage. Reimage saves the hassle of doing all this work manually and even saves time from having to back up and reinstall the entire operating system. Just download and run Reimage and the app will scan and diagnose your PC, then quickly repair your damaged PC with technology that not only fixes your Windows Operating System, but also reverses the damage already done with a full database of replacement files. Reimage's patented technology actually reverses the damage done to your Windows operating system. You can find it at www.reimage.com.

Why is the total space available on a hard drive less than the space shown on the box?
- Steve L., Boston, MA
The biggest discrepancy comes in the way the hard drive space is measured in the first place. Drive manufacturers measure driver space in “decimal” terms. For example, they call one gigabyte 1,000,000,000 bytes. Operating systems use “binary” terms, so Windows considers one gigabyte 1,073,741,824 bytes. So when Windows reports available space on a drive, the resulting calculation suggests that the drive is smaller than what the manufacturer advertises.

I have uninstalled a program that used to load when my computer started. Now every time I start my system I receive an error saying that the program cannot be found. What can I do to fix this?
- John H., Fort Wayne, IN
If you uninstall one of the programs that loads when you start your system, it may cause an error message every time you boot that says that it can’t find a file and give the name of the file. Here is how you can fix that problem:
  1. Click on the Start button, then Run. Type in msconfig and click OK.
  2. Click on the Startup tab to locate the program that is causing the error. Usually if you look at the end of the Command column you can find the file name that Windows says it can’t find.
  3. Once that file name is located, just uncheck it, and click OK.
  4. Reboot and the error message should be gone.
